Optimization of biogas utilization

According to the main guidelines of European Green Deal, the biogas / biomethane industry will support the economy in three main areas: energy, industry and transport. Transition Technologies offers is a multi-layer optimization tool, taking into account both commercial and technical aspects of related processes to provide support for multi-energy companies and biogas plant operators.

The high level objective of optimization is to maximize revenues from the utilization of produced biogas based on:

- information on planned production,

- current market conditions,

- data from existing economic support systems

- technical and economic characteristics of processes using biogas / biomethane as an energy carrier.

For each time step of the optimization scenario, the optimizer is able to provide the user with information on how the available biogas can be optimally utilized or sold to target customers and in what form (biomethane, bioLNG, bioCNG, electricity and heat). The solution can be used to support both, teams dealing with gaseous fuels trading and operators of installations utilizing biogas.

In the upper layer, the optimizer takes into account the current biogas production, prices of high-methane gas, LNG, electricity, the cost of biogas treatment, liquefaction and compression. Based on this information, the optimal way of using biogas will be indicated. The system will additionally take into account the possibility of refueling vehicles as well as storing biogas and biomethane.

The lower layer of the optimizer performs the task of minimizing the operating costs of individual technical installations in the supply chain by planning the optimal load distribution between individual devices, as well as the selection of devices operating points to ensure achieving demanded process set-poins. The solution has been designed to support a wide range of technical installations, such as compressor units for injection of biomethane into the network, gas engines and vehicle refueling stations.
